Chairman of the Infrastructure Committee Selemani Kakoso (MP) has urged the management of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to continue seeking customers in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and South Sudan.
Kakoso made these remarks during a meeting of the Infrastructure Committee to discuss the performance report of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) in Dodoma.
“The Port of Dar es Salaam has the capacity to handle cargo from DRC-Kongo, Uganda, Zambia, and Malawi on a large scale, so TPA should ensure that you go out and find customers in those countries,” Kakoso said.
The Infrastructure Committee also directed TPA to ensure the completion of the construction process for the Oil Tanks in the Kigamboni area. These fuel tanks will have the capacity to receive about 360,000 cubic meters of oil. The construction is currently in the procurement stage.
Deputy Minister of Transport David Kihanzile stated that the Ministry of Transport and TPA are working on a comprehensive plan to reach markets in Uganda, Malawi, DRC-Kongo, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Kihanzile mentioned that the government is continuing the process of improving infrastructure for transportation in the southern region up to Lake Nyasa, including the enhancement of roads and railways at the Kalema Port and the improvement of shipbuilding on Lake Tanganyika and Victoria.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Director-General of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Juma Kijava, mentioned that the authority is currently enhancing the ports of Tanga, Kigoma, Mtwara, and others.
